Alentejo

Alentejo (Portuguese for beyond the Tejo, pronounced : Alenteischu) is a region in Portugal.

The topography of Alentejo is characterised by the wide open plains in the south and the granite hills in the northeast near the Spanish boarder.

Only cork oaks and olive trees expand into the vastness of the landscape. Here and there a mighty wall that surrounds a little town like Marvao or Monsaraz appears, or a plain dolmen arises, giving the place the magic of ancient times. On the hill-tops you will find one-storeyed whitewashed houses. Castles will remind you of battles and conquests. In the patios and gardens you will feel the influence of the Moors who shaped both the people and the nature.
